WTF is Human Design?

If you've new to me or my body of work, you might be wondering... ok, I see this Human Design thing pop up a lot on her site, but WTF is it? Spoiler alert: That's what we're gonna cover in this here blog post thing.

What is Human Design?

Human Design is a system for understanding humanity on a broader scale, as well as the unique energetic blueprint that you came out of the womb with. It's a system that was channeled by Ra Uru Hu in January 1987. It combines astrology, the i-Ching, and a modified version of the chakra system.

Unless you're an identical or fraternal twin born a few minutes after you, your blueprint will generally be specific to you. You're here to carry out a specific purpose and do it in a way that is the path of least resistance for you and that's the beauty of your Human Design chart - it removes a lot of those existential questions about who you are and why you're really here.

This is my chart, which will give you a feel of what one looks like:

My Human Design chart. If you actually knew WTF any of this was, you'd realize how much more intimate of an experience this is than sex because this is the undressed version of who I am, fabulousness and flaws both laid out.

Types in Human Design

I will go over each of these in the future in much more detail - and as I do, I'll update the links in this post, but the macro view of Human Design is that all of humanity can be divided into one of five archetypes:

  1. Manifestors (9% of the global population)

  2. Generators (70% of the global population)

  3. Manifesting Generators (Considered to be part of the 70% of generators)

  4. Projectors (20% of the global population)

  5. Reflectors (1% of the population)

To be clear, if you're not a Manifestor/a Mani-Geni, it doesn't mean that you don't have the capacity to manifest. It's just that the specifics of how you bring things into your experience will be radically different.

Manifestors - Manifestors are here to get shit done. They are often volatile and polarizing in personality. They are the only people who can tell others about what they plan to do and have it go down well.

Generators - Generators, as the majority of the population, are the life force of the planet. With their defined sacral centres, they are do-ers. That doesn't mean that they aren't meant for leadership, but they'll find themselves most satisfied in situations where they have the ability to exert their consistent, sustainable life energy.

Manifesting Generators - A combination of the above, Manifesting Generators are a newer emergence within Human Design. They have the anger of a Manifestor with the frustration of a generator, but they represent what's possible for humanity when they live in their design. It's important that Mani-Genis do what they love, because if they don't... watch out world.

Projectors - Projectors are the guides of the world (I am one). Our job is to see others deeply and get right to the core of who they are. This can make some of the other types uncomfortable because we generally don't like surface level interactions. A lot of Projectors use our strategy "waiting for the invitation" as a way to stay stuck in victim mode, but you need to know that invitations are everywhere, you just have to look for them. Projectors are NOT made for the 9-5 since we don't have stable life-force energy.

Reflectors - Reflectors are the unicorns of the population. They are completely undefined (more on this in a sec) and their job is to be a mirror for the population. Because these people are incredibly rare, it's important that they be properly nurtured and learn to live in their design, otherwise their lives can be an intense emotional roller coaster.

Lines and channels and gates - oh my!

Now that you have a basic understanding of Human Design and the different types, let's move into some of the intricacies.

Gates

The gates are based on the 64 gates and hexagrams in the i-Ching system. I'll get more into the i-Ching in a future post because it's not essential info for you right now, but here's what you need to know. If in your chart, one of the numbers has a purple oval around it, that gate is "activated" in your chart. If it's not, then it's not activated in your chart. Each gate has 6 lines that it can be active through. You can see them on the sides of your chart.

For example, my life purpose (conscious sun) is 7.3. Gate 7 is activated in my chart, and it acts through gate 3. My purpose would be slightly different if it went through 1 or 6.

While there's no minimum number of gates activated, in a Human Design chart, there will be a maximum of 26 activated gates.

Channels

The connection lines in between two gates are called "channels." When you have a gate active at either end of a channel, then it is activated. When the gate doesn't connect from end to end, it's only partially active. Depending on whether the gates are acting through your subconscious (design) or conscious (personality) you'll notice the presence of these channels more or less in your life. Knowing your activated gates and channels allows you to harness consciously the unconscious parts of your makeup.

If you come into contact with someone who has the "missing" half of a channel activated, your energies will complete that channel in each other's presence. That's why someone can feel like your "other half" - they might be completing several channels and together, the two of you will be able to do good in the world if you focusing on nurturing those particular connections!

Profiles

Every Human Design chart has a "profile." Your profile is the overarching theme of why you're here and how you need to move through life. This profile is made up of 2 numbers between 1 and 6. For example, my profile is 3/5, known more commonly as the Martyr Heretic profile.

As a 3/5, I learn by trial and error, which is why I lovingly dub myself a "professional mistake maker" - I'm very pattern and trend oriented and a natural problem solver, so my job is to go through life trying things and them imparting the wisdom of what I've learned for others. I also have to be careful that I don't focus on the negative and relaying the negative to others, or this can lead to social isolation for me.

Each profile dictates what you're specifically meant to do in this lifetime, which will then be complimented and amplified by your purpose.

Centres

Unlike in the traditional Middle Eastern version of chakras, in Human Design, we have 9 centres, or energy points that are either defined or undefined.

These are the 9 centres, from top to bottom:

  1. Head

  2. Ajna

  3. Throat

  4. Self/G Center

  5. Heart

  6. Splenic

  7. Sacral

  8. Solar Plexus

  9. Root

If on your chart a centre is defined, it will be colored in. A "defined" centre is one that has consistent, reliable, internally regulated energy. You can always rely on the wisdom of these centres as being stable and fixed.

Uncolored centres are considered "undefined." These are the parts of who you are that are subject to conditioning from other people - this is where you're most likely to take on patterns of parents, friends, teachers, etc. and move away from the integrity of your design.

Strategy + Not-Self Theme

Your strategy and not-self theme are critical parts of your design. Your strategy is the guidance for how you'll be most successful in life. Your not-self theme is an indicator of when you've done something that isn't correct for you.

Here are the strategies and not-self themes based by type:

  1. Manifestor: Inform/Anger

  2. Generator: Respond/Frustration

  3. Projector: Wait for the invitation/Bitterness

  4. Reflector: Wait a full 28 days/Disappointment

For example, as a Projector, my strategy is to "wait for the invitation." I can't just walk up to somebody on the street and say "Hey, did you know that there's a new-ish system of human understanding called Human Design and I can tell you all about it."

Well, technically, I could, but when they look at me with crazy eyes, I'd be extremely bitter.

Instead, I need to wait to be invited. In conversations, I will wait to participate until someone looks at me or specifically asks for input, because if I don't, I'm likely to be ignored and that will make me feel bitter.

A simple life scenario: Kelly is a Manifestor. Jenny is a Projector. Kara is a generator. Amanda is a Reflector.

Kelly decides that they want to out to a club. She texts her friends "Hey girls, I'm going to a club tonight. Do you want to come?" Kelly's living out her strategy because she initiated a plan and whether or not her girlfriends come, she's going out because she's decided that that is what she wants to do.

By asking if her friends want to tag along, Kelly is extending an invitation to Jenny and so she can say "yep, I'm in." if Kelly had just said "Hey girls, I'm going to a club tonight" there would be no invite there for Jenny to tag along. If Jenny asked "hey can I come along?" instead of waiting for the invitation, Kelly could have easily said no, and Jenny would feel bitter about it.

Similarly, Kara instantly gets a "nuh-uh" in her gut and politely declines. She's living in her strategy of responding. If she out of the blue thought about going to a club and didn't wait to have something to respond to and just started making plans, they likely would have fallen apart.

Amanda reads the excitement that's building amongst the girls and says that "yes" she'll be in. However, an hour or two into clubbing, she feels a little exhausted because she's around so much energy and she decides to go home early while Kara and Jenny are still partying. She's disappointed that she has to leave early, but she feels too overwhelmed.

This is an example of how a Reflector maybe can't wait a full moon cycle to make day to day decisions, but really, the best thing for Amanda to have said would be "If you go out next month, ask me then and we'll see!" That would give her a full 28 days to process in integrity about whether that's an experience that she wants or not.

Final reflections

There are some other parts of the chart that we didn't go over here, like the Definitions, The Incarnation Crosses, etc. but those are more advanced pieces of your design. This will give you a strong stream of basics to focus on.

If you're feeling a little skeptical

Maybe this all sounds a little "woo woo" but remember that Pythagoras was a hardcore believer and OG developer of numerology, so... sometimes the lines between science and the mystical aren't as cut and dry as we think they are. The spread of organized religion also banned and made illegal several practices (think: witchcraft). To be clear, I'm not anti-science in any way - but there are lots of things in the universe that even science has no set answer for. For instance: How in the hell did the pyramids get their little pointy top things? We have probabilities but nobody's 100% sure yet.

A brief note on KIDS

Because Human Design has not made its way into the masses yet, parents are likely to raise all their kids in the exact same way, even when they may not have the same Human Design and this can be detrimental to the relationship between the children and set them on a dangerous path of straying from their design.

If you're pregnant/have children, having readings for the kids would be highly beneficial as it will help reveal ways to consciously parent them and support their design, as opposed to diverting them away from it.
